This email message (01/12/2021 from Melissa Toner) contains important information related to Canvas marking periods and semester settings for secondary and elementary teachers.
Secondary Teachers
-
2nd-semester Canvas course cards are rostered and pushed out to Canvas for all secondary courses.
-
2nd-semester course card(s) will appear on the teacher's Canvas Dashboard in the “Unpublished” course section of the page.
-
Teachers will need to publish the 2nd-semester course card from their Canvas Dashboard.
-
The 2nd-semester course card MUST be used to deliver second-semester content because the 3rd and 4th marking periods and 2nd-semester will be configured with the second-semester start and end dates. (The 1st-semester course cards will be configured with 1st semester marking period and semester start and end dates). (The marking period and semester configuration in Canvas will occur sometime within the next couple of days)
-
To view the appropriate marking periods in the corresponding course cards for 1st- semester course and in the 2nd-semester select the course, select Grades, in the gradebook select “filters”, select “grading periods”, in the dropdown menu at the top right, select individual marking periods or all.
-
Teachers will need to either import the Secondary Template from Canvas Commons to their 2nd-semester course(s) and edit the pages to reflect the new second-semester content and/ OR copy pages from their 1st-semester course(s) to the 2nd-Semester course card that are still applicable for 2nd-Semester.
Please note: When copying pages from one course to another course if the page includes buttons (shortcuts with URLs) that are linked to pages within the original Canvas course the URL will need to be updated in order for the link to the correct page within the course. If the buttons take students to a URL outside of the course pages, no changes are needed when the page is copied.
IMPORTANT: A due date MUST be entered for assignments in order for the grade book to correctly calculate total grades/scores.
Elementary Teachers
-
Canvas course rosters are updated through a nightly import from eSchool to Canvas.
-
The Canvas gradebook can be filtered to view all marking periods, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th marking periods or all marking periods by selecting the Canvas course, select Grades, in the Gradebook select “filters”, select “grading periods”, in the dropdown menu at the top right, select 1st Marking period or 2nd Marking period, within the marking period you may select 1st 2nd, 3rd, or 4th marking periods to view.
IMPORTANT: A due date MUST be entered for assignments in order for the grade book to calculate the correct total grade/score.
Getting help
Please reference the MPS Canvas Knowledgebase at https://midlandps.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/2301/Portal/KB/Search?SearchText=%2523Canvas. We are updating and adding new articles often.
Please submit a help desk ticket if a Canvas course card still doesn’t exist after selecting Courses from the left navigation menu, then select All Courses, and verifying the course does exist in TAC.
Classes and rosters in TAC and Canvas should be nearly the same. If you do not see students in your Canvas class, please reference the TAC roster. If students are not listed in either your TAC or Canvas roster, please contact your building administrator to schedule students into your class. Please submit a help desk ticket if class rosters do not match. Roster updates between TAC and Canvas occur nightly and updates may take 24 hours to occur.
